Reflective Ghost Imaging through Turbulence
Recent work has indicated that ghost imaging may have applications in
standoff sensing. However, most theoretical work has addressed
transmission-based ghost imaging. To be a viable remote-sensing system, the
ghost imager needs to image rough-surfaced targets in reflection through long,
turbulent optical paths. We develop, within a Gaussian-state framework,
expressions for the spatial resolution, image contrast, and signal-to-noise
ratio of such a system. We consider rough-surfaced targets that create fully
developed speckle in their returns, and Kolmogorov-spectrum turbulence that is
uniformly distributed along all propagation paths. We address both classical
and nonclassical optical sources, as well as a computational ghost imager.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
Vegetative and geologic mapping of the western Seward Peninsula, Alaska, based on ERTS-1 imagery
ERTS-1 scene 1009-22095 (Western Seward Peninsula, Alaska) has been studied, partly as a training exercise, to evaluate whether direct visual examination of individual and custom color-composite prints can provide new information on the vegetation and geology of this relatively well known area of Alaska. The vegetation analysis reveals seven major vegetation types, only four of which are described on existing vegetation maps. In addition, the ERTS analysis provides greater detail than the existing maps on the areal distribution of vegetation types. The geologic analysis demonstrates that most of the major rock units and geomorphic boundaries shown on the available geologic maps could also be identified on the ERTS data. Several major high-angle faults were observed, but the zones of thrust faults which are much less obvious
Region of the anomalous compression under Bondi-Hoyle accretion
We investigate the properties of an axisymmetric non-magnetized gas flow
without angular momentum on a small compact object, in particular, on a
Schwarzschild black hole in the supersonic region near the object; the velocity
of the object itself is assumed to be low compared to the speed of sound at
infinity. First of all, we see that the streamlines intersect (i.e., a caustic
forms) on the symmetry axis at a certain distance from the center on the
front side if the pressure gradient is neglected. The characteristic radial
size of the region, in which the streamlines emerging from the sonic surface at
an angle no larger than to the axis intersect, is To refine the flow structure in this region, we numerically
compute the system in the adiabatic approximation without ignoring the
pressure. We estimate the parameters of the inferred region with anomalously
high matter temperature and density accompanied by anomalously high energy

Is There a Relationship between the Density of Primordial Black Holes in a Galaxy and the Rate of Cosmological Gamma-Ray Bursts?
The rate of accretion of matter from a solar-type star onto a primordial
black hole (PBH) that passes through it is calculated. The probability that a
PBH is captured into an orbit around a star in a galaxy is found. The mean
lifetime of the PBH in such an orbit and the rate of orbital captures of PBHs
in the galaxy are calculated. It is shown that this rate does not depend on the
mass of the PBH. This mechanism cannot make an appreciable contribution to the
rate of observed gamma-ray bursts. The density of PBHs in the galaxy can reach
a critical value - the density of the mass of dark matter in the galaxy.Comment: 7 page
Two-mode heterodyne phase detection
We present an experimental scheme that achieves ideal phase detection on a
two-mode field. The two modes and are the signal and image band modes
of an heterodyne detector, with the field approaching an eigenstate of the
photocurrent . The field is obtained by means of a
high-gain phase-insensitive amplifier followed by a high-transmissivity
beam-splitter with a strong local oscillator at the frequency of one of the two

Adaptive phase estimation is more accurate than non-adaptive phase estimation for continuous beams of light
We consider the task of estimating the randomly fluctuating phase of a
continuous-wave beam of light. Using the theory of quantum parameter
estimation, we show that this can be done more accurately when feedback is used
(adaptive phase estimation) than by any scheme not involving feedback
(non-adaptive phase estimation) in which the beam is measured as it arrives at
the detector. Such schemes not involving feedback include all those based on
heterodyne detection or instantaneous canonical phase measurements. We also
demonstrate that the superior accuracy adaptive phase estimation is present in

Pilot trial of fk 506 in the management of steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome
Seven patients with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome were treated with FK 506 monotherapy. Four patients were children with focal sclerosing glomerulonephritis (FSGS). Three of these had evldence for chronic progressive renal disease consisting of interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy on pretreatment renal biopsies. Two patients had also failed cyclosporin A (CsA), two cyclophosphamide, and one chlorambucil prior to treatment with FK 506. Three patients were adults wlth mesangial proliferative. membranoproliferative, and membranous glomerulonephritis. Three patterns of response were noted: (1) a reduction in proteinuria to normal levels, (2) partial response (50% reduction) or; (3) no improvement. All patients except one experienced at least a 50% reduction in protein excretion at some time during FK 506 therapy. Two of the children and one adult reduced protein excretion to essentially normal values. One patient had no sustained reduction In Droteln excretion and is considered to be a treatment fallure, although her protein excretion was approximately 50% of pretreatment values intermittently. The drug was generally well tolerated. The most common side-effect was nephrotoxlclty, whlch was reversible. These encouraging results suggest that FK 506 monotherapy may be effective in controlling the proteinuria of somc patlents with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome The use of this drug may extend our understanding of the role of T lymphocytes and cytokines in the pathogenesls of glomerulonephritis. Cold Atomic Collisions: Coherent Control of Penning and Associative Ionization
Coherent Control techniques are computationally applied to cold (1mK < T < 1
K) and ultracold (T < 1 microK) Ne*(3s,3P2) + Ar(1S0) collisions. We show that
by using various initial superpositions of the Ne*(3s,3P2) M = {-2,-1,0,1,2}
Zeeman sub-levels it is possible to reduce the Penning Ionization (PI) and
Associative Ionization (AI) cross sections by as much as four orders of
magnitude. It is also possible to drastically change the ratio of these two
processes. The results are based on combining, within the "Rotating Atom
